Leeward Islands v South Africans - 4 day match - at St Johns, Antigua - 1998/9 - Match Preview

Pitch: 122 - A fast paced wicket on which the quick bowlers will always have a chance. Run rate should be good with ball coming quickly onto the bat and once the early fire has gone from the pitch the batsmen are likely to enjoy themselves. Late in the game the fast bowlers may come right back into their own as the wearing pitch recovers some of its sting.

South Africans won by 252 runs.

Man of the Match: A.A.Donald

Leeward Islands XI were bundled out for a paltry 57 on an Uneven pitch to lose by 252 runs.

The home side lost it's last 8 wickets for 17 in a spineless display on a pitch that was offering the bowlers some assistance.

Allan Donald was virtually unplayable in taking 3-9 as he finished the match with 6 wickets to scoop the Man of the Match award.

After a 4th consecutive win the South Africans only concerns are that no one has posted a century for them on tour so far.

Pitch: 19 - Hard and bumpy, this wicket will always give the faster bowlers a chance. There is also the prospect that it will not stand up to five (or even four) days play and batting could become a nightmare in the later stages. It is doubtful that this wicket is really up to test standard.

Pitch: 92 - Rather an odd looking pitch of varying colour and the groundsman is reported as being a little unhappy with his product. The wicket is likely to play reasonably for a couple of days but as the surface wears unevenly the bounce may be affected making batting difficult. If the pitch begins to wear badly on the final day batsman will need to concern themselves about survival rather than embarking on a run chase.

Pitch: 16 - Possibly over watered and with a distinctly green look to it. The pitch must favour the seamers early on but for how long and to what extent is difficult to predict. Once the initial liveliness has gone it should play quite well and there is little prospect of any real help for the bowlers thereafter.

South African captain Hansie Cronje top scored with 77 as the visitors declared at Tea on Day 2 with a 1st innings lead of 105.

Gary Kirsten and Jaques Kallis also made starts but good bowling by left arm spinner Roy Marshall kept the run rate in check and he finished with 4-35 off 22 accurate overs.

Dwight Mais bowled well for the home side to take 2-34 while there was some penetrative but expensive support from Marlon Black who picked up 2-57 off 11.
